Lucky Peach is a new journal of food writing, published on aquarterly basis by McSweeneys. It is a creation of David Chang, theJames Beard Award-winning chef behind the Momofuku restaurants in NewYork, Momofuku cookbook cowriter Peter Meehan, and Zero Point ZeroProductions producers of the Travel Channels Emmy Award-winningAnthony Bourdain: No Reservations.
The result of this collaboration isa mélange of travelogue, essays, art, photography, and rants in afull-color, meticulously designed format. Recipes will defy the tiredingredients-and-numbered-steps formula. Theyll be laid out sensibly, inspired by the thought process that went into developing them. Eachissue will focus on a theme (Issue Ones theme is "Ramen), withcontributions from Harold McGee, Ruth Reichl, John T. Edge, ToddKliman and a cavalcade of other writers and artists. The reader willmeander through arguments about the superiority of yellow alkalinenoodles over Italian egg pasta a taxonomy of ramen-packagecharacters an eating tour of Japan helmed by an over-stuffed andnauseated, but nevertheless intrepid, David Chang and a booze-fueledrant on mediocrity in American cuisine with chefs Chang, Bourdain, and Wylie Dufresne set in the Spanish Basque country. The aim of LuckyPeach is to give a platform to a brand of food writing that beganwith unorthodox authors like Bourdain, resulting in a publicationthat appeals to diehard foodies as well as fans of good writing andart in general.
