This book is dedicated to John Montague, fourth Lord of Sandwich, who was born on November 3, 1718. His Lordship was England’s First Lord of the Admiralty, Secretary of State for the Northern Department, Post Master General, and perhaps most important, at least to us today, he is the man after whom Captain Cook named the Sandwich Islands in 1778. In addition to all of the above, he was a rake and a gambler who is said to have invented the sandwich as a time saving nourishment to be enjoyed while properly engaged in a twenty-four hour long gambling session in 1762. He died in London England, on April 30, 1792, and National Sandwich Day, named in his honor, is celebrated on his birthday, November 3. Let’s all help to remember him and eat and enjoy a really special sandwich on his birthday. The author of this book will be joining you on his Lordship’s special day of remembrance and then we’ll all be happy. To find the ideal sandwich with which to celebrate, read on and bon appétit.
